To date, typhoon Frank (Fengshen) have just passed our province but is still in the Philippines’ area of responsibility. It was one disastrous typhoon leaving a lot of areas flooded and a number of people homeless.

In Marinduque, three people were reported dead,362 families were evacuated, 500 houses were damaged, roads have been impassable, power lines and telecommunication lines were cut off since late Saturday afternoon.

Panay Island will remain powerless for at least about a week due to damages in transmission and distribution lines brought about by typhoon.

Iloilo province and its capital city was submerged in flood. Almost all of Iloilo’s 42 towns and city, including those that had not previously experienced flooding, were under water. Fifty-two people died in Iloilo province, 15 in Antique, six in Iloilo City, and four each in the provinces of Capiz and Negros Occidental. Still missing were at least 136 others, including 78 in Iloilo and 55 in Antique, according to disaster officials.

MV Princess of the Stars, a ferry carrying more than 700 people sank in typhoon-tossed waters off Sibuyan island in Romblon province. Search and rescue operation have only found 29 bodies and 6 survivors as of Monday morning.

Jam Packed Long Weekend

The last weekend before school starts is a long one as the legal non-working Philippine Independence day was moved to June 9 from June 12 in order to compress the working day to a continuous work week. This could have attract mixed opinion from the practical and traditional people but I guess Filipinos have grown accustomed to this practice by the current government.

I personally favor this move for two reasons: 1) it does not break the working momentum, and 2) you can go on vacation because of the long weekend. But I guess the parent’s main concern this week is to complete their kids’ school supplies and uniforms. Expect traffics and a jam packed mall with this.

Anyway, enjoy going back to school dear students.

Students are now counting days before school starts. I always hear students wanting to get out of school and start working while those already working dreams of going back to school. I guess it is human nature to want things we do not have. This should then encourage us to always seize the moment and enjoy where we are presently in. The day to work will eventually come and learning need not stop after school. Life itself is one big school ground were lessons are given every passing day.

The jungle often hides itself in the density of its own matter. As such, it is a place of great complexity and unknowing. For many of us, the metaphor it’s a jungle out there describes the unpredictability and potential threats of our world. To be in a jungle usually means you are on a quest for treasure, sacred knowledge, or other things kept in deeply covered and generally inaccessible places.

The danger that you feel about the jungle is also the reason that things of value are kept there. The difficulty in acquiring riches or wisdom heightens the appreciation of them. (Dense urban environments can be a metaphor of the jungle as well.)

In your waking life is the jungle a symbol of all that is wrong with human progress or the place where danger lurks? Some people perceive the jungle as the beauty of undisturbed nature while others feel it is a haven of mystery and danger.
